In a rural region like the Kootenays, community doesn’t just happen. It’s built and sustained by people who choose to show up for one another. At Intercultural Kootenays, membership is one of the most meaningful ways individuals can support the work of creating safer, more inclusive, and more connected communities across our region.

Membership is a visible show of support for a small, grassroots organization doing vital work in a rural context. Unlike large urban centres, rural communities often lack dedicated resources to address racism, discrimination, and social isolation. When you become a member of Intercultural Kootenays, you help demonstrate that this work is not only relevant here, it’s necessary. This collective show of support is especially critical when we apply for grants and funding. Funders look closely at whether an organization is rooted in its community. Membership numbers help tell that story clearly: people in the Kootenays care about intercultural understanding, equity, and belonging, and they are invested in making those values real.

Membership also strengthens democratic participation and accountability. As a member, you have a direct say in how we are governed, including the ability to vote at Annual General Meetings. This means community members like you help shape the organization’s direction, priorities, and leadership. Rather than decisions being made in isolation, IK is guided by the voices of those it serves and represents. Membership ensures the organization remains community-led, transparent, and responsive.

Most importantly, membership is an act of solidarity. In times when racism, discrimination, and division can feel louder and more visible — even in small towns — becoming a member is a clear statement. You are not alone and you are supported. Membership signals that there is a growing community in the Kootenays that believes in dignity, safety, and belonging for everyone, regardless of race, culture, identity, language, age, ability, or background.

When you choose to become a member, you are helping build something larger than yourself. Membership in our community is a collective commitment to standing against racism and discrimination, and toward a future rooted in connection, care, and shared responsibility. That collective commitment is what makes real, lasting change possible.

We have three tiers of membership options, all with sliding scale options. These fees help with our operational costs and every little bit helps. To learn more and become a member, visit our membership page.
